The potatoe-headed Abura-sumashi; a weird but popular Japanese Yokai from the island of Amakusa . Its name can be translated as "oil wringer", and it may be connected to the extraction of oil from the seeds of the Camellia sasanqua plant. This image was done for a book project about the creatures of japanese folklore.

What exactly does he do? He looks like someones friendly grandfather, so I suppose he isn’t dangerous?

:-) Richard Svensson replies: "There is one tale about him, where he scares an old lady and her grandson while walking through a mountain pass. She tells the kid about the monster who’s supposed to live there, but says it’s just an old wive’s tale. Then the Abura-Sumashi appears and says "Oh yeah!?""
